Maungatautari Ecological Island Trust

The ecological restoration of Maungatautari has taken another giant leap forward with the blessing of the site and lifting of the tapu by Ngati Koroki Kahukura hapu on 1 November 2003. The Maungatautari Ecological Island Trust was honoured by a spectacular welcome to the Maungatautari Marae and then being able to be present at the spiritual formalities on the maunga.

Ngati Koroki Kahukura whose Marae, Pohara and Maungatautari, are nestled on the slopes of the maunga, are recognised as representing tangata whenua interests and have always supported the aims and objectives of the Maungatautari Ecological Island Trust. A recent claim to the Waitangi Tribunal for the maunga reinforces this support and also seeks Crown resources to protect and enhance Maungatautari for all New Zealanders. Part of the relief sought in the claim is that the maunga be the sole beneficiary of any compensation or resources that may be paid by the Crown.

Uninterrupted public access to the maunga is assured in accordance with its status as a Scenic Reserve, however, Ngati Koroki Kahukura are seeking recognition as tangata whenua of the maunga. The joint governance structure proposed in the Waitangi Tribunal claim is not of concern to the Maungatautari Ecological Island Trust, which is pressing on with the project, and it may provide additional resources for the protection and enhancement of the maunga.

On Saturday 8th November 2003 at the public Open Day Mr Robin Murray, Founder Trustee of the Scottwood Group, made a presentation of a cheque for $1.05 million. This generous contribution was accepted by Mr David Wallace, Chairperson of the Maungatautari Ecological Island Trust. A significant donation of this size provides a huge positive incentive for the Trust, not only in monetary terms, but also the confidence and leadership given to other potential funders that this project is in fact a reality.

The Chairman of Raukawa Trust Mr Wally Papa says "We fully support the aims and objectives of the Maungatautari Ecological Island Trust and their progress to date. We also acknowledge their support for our attempts as tangata whenua to positively address the Maungatautari reserve governance and management issues with the Department of Conservation and the Waipa District Council".
