Pool PartyAs Halloween becomes more and more popular throughout New Zealand, concerns have also been raised about safety issues and commercialism. Sensing a need to provide an alternative celebration, Te Awamutu Combined Church Leaders Association took the initiative and organised a free pool party at the Te Awamutu Events Centre. The idea was to provide a fun, safe environment without any of the problems associated with Halloween. Anglican minister Stephanie Owen notes that Halloween is not always fun for everyone, especially elderly people who fear the trick-or-treat regime. "I know people who are scared of Halloween and spend the whole night hiding and pretending they're not home," she says. In addition, many people find the increasingly gruesome nature of costumes and accessories disturbing. Overseas, incidents such as razor blades embedded in lollies have been reported and concern is growing about the danger faced by children. Here in New Zealand, a Palmerston North girl was assaulted last year while trick-or-treating. The alternative pool party provided "the treats without the tricks". Children were encouraged to dress in non-frightening costumes and were given free party packs. There was also free access to the Aquatics Centre, games and a sausage sizzle. Having received a very positive reception from party-goers, the organisers hope to make this an annual event. |
