Te Awamutu - one step ahead

A new catchphrase based on a Split Enz song is set to keep Te Awamutu one step ahead of the rest.

The phrase, Rose Town Te Awamutu – One Step Ahead, is taken from the song on the band's 1981 album Waiata.

The band – which features Te Awamutu brothers Tim and Neil Finn –- has given the town permission to use the phrase in its marketing.

The idea came from a survey in Te Awamutu that found most people identified the town with roses, the Finn brothers and bush walks.

The catchphrase idea came from the town's promotions organisation, Te Awamutu Alive, which recommended it to the Te Awamutu Community Board.

The board has put it forward to the Waipa District Council, which is seeking feedback from the community.

It is already being used by the Te Awamutu Information Centre in its promotions and Te Awamutu Alive member Roz Liddell said people were loving it. "It's new, it's out there and makes us proud," she said.

But why stick with Te Awamutu? The Times has come up with other places and organisations that could benefit from adopting a song from the Finn brothers.

  • Auckland – Nobody Takes Me Seriously Anyway.
  • Wellington – The Weather With You.
  • Team New Zealand – Six Months in a Leaky Boat.
