Kawhia Safari 2003

Story Supplied By Bill Neill

The Rotary Club of Te Awamutu with Waikato 4WD Club are pleased to advise that the third Kawhia Safari for four wheel drive vehicles will be held at Oparau on the weekend of March 15 & 16, 2003.

This very popular annual event continues to attract major interest and is again drawing entries from all over the North Island.

This Safari not only challenges participants vehicle handling skills but provides a unique opportunity to experience the rugged and historical north island west coast territory in company with fellow 4WD enthusiasts. Driver friendly, but attention demanding, routes have been selected in the Oparau and Hauturu Districts for both Saturday AM & PM and Sunday AM runs from a base camp adjacent to Oparau Hall.

While the Safari is not a bush and bog weekend the trails will be a challenging experience for 4WD drivers with a number of random competitions testing individual skills and team work.

Safaris and rallies in the 4WD genre are family occasions which generate confidence, competence and community entertainment among participants and good will between urban and rural residents.

Vehicles will be subject to prior expert scrutiny so that an acceptable standard of road worthiness and safety is maintained.

Entries, which exclude vans, will be limited to the first 70 paid up entries.

Catering for the event will again be in the competent and generous hands of district groups and a Country style Social will entertain and refresh participants on Saturday night.

Te Awamutu Rotary Club gratefully acknowledges the experienced assistance of Waikato 4WD Club members and particularly recognises the goodwill and co operation of land owners and farmers in the Oparau / Hauturu districts.

As with all Rotary community activities the beneficiaries of profits from the event will be local contributing organisations and the Rotary International Polio Eradication Programme.
