Combined Church Service Te Awamutu Christian churches came together this morning in a mass combined service at the Events Centre. Although similar combined events have been held many times over the past few years, this was the first time all local churches rearranged their own timetables and brought their respective congregations to a Sunday morning service. The theme of today was "One Body", emphasising the spirit of unity. Attended by more than 1200 people, it was an impressive gathering. The varied programme included readings, prayer, sermons, singing and dance performances, and items for the children. There were contemporary and traditional hymns, with backing from a band made up from 5 churches. The finale "How Great Though Art" threatened to completely lift the roof and make this the shortest-lived Event Centre in history. The service was organised by the Christian Church Leaders Association, who have been delighted with the positive response. There have been many calls to make this a regular event, something the association will be considering in the future. A collection during the service raised over $2,700, of which $1,500 will be needed to cover expenses. A meeting on Wednesday will decide how to use the surplus. |
