Police want answers to a freak accident on Ohaupo Road in which a Kihikihi woman was lucky not to suffer a serious injury.

The woman was driving south at about 3.30pm on Thursday, May 29 in a blue Renault hatchback when a metal bracket smashed through her windscreen. At the time a truck had passed heading north in the opposite lane. The metal bracket hit the car’s steering wheel, almost severing two fingers.

Police are amazed the woman was able to keep her wits about her and pull into Masons Garden Centre and summon assistance. Constable Scott Miller believes if the bracket had not hit the steering wheel it would have continued into the car and caused a much more serious injury to the driver. He wants anyone who witnessed the accident or who may have information about the bracket to contact him at the Te Awamutu Station (872 0100).
