Emergency services believe the female driver of a northbound Honda was lucky to survive a spectacular crash on Ohaupo Road, State Highway 3, on Saturday morning.

She is currently in Waikato Hospital. At the time of going to press she had not been spoken to by Police to determine the cause of the single vehicle crash.

Emergency services were called to the scene, about 8.15am. Police believe the driver may have fallen asleep as there are no signs of braking before the vehicle left the road on a moderate bend south of Ohaupo.

The car took out a section of farm fence, grazed a tree, leapt a driveway, taking out two more sections of fence, landed in a paddock and somersaulted through another fence before coming to rest in another paddock, about 150 metres from where she left the road.

Firefighters had to cut the woman from her car before she could be treated by St John Ambulance officers and transported to hospital.

It was the start of a busy day for Te Awamutu firefighters, who had five callouts on Saturday, and the start of a busy weekend for Te Awamutu Police.
