The competition was won by Te Awamutu College seventh former Adam O’Brien. Adam’s performance of ‘My Girl’, complete with dance routine, won over the judges and audience, as he also won the Audience Choice Award. Runner-up Nicole Withers performed a beautiful and moving rendition of the Evanescence song ‘My Immortal’. Organisers Rosetown Lions are rapt with the standard of the competitors and the turnout to the first event and were moved to say it could become an annual competition. The event attracted 13 young performers aged between 12 and 20, each getting just one opportunity to impress the judges and audience. The judges commented that the standard was such that the contest made for an entertaining concert in its own right. They said about five competitors stood out at the head of the field, but pure entertainment won out on the night. Rosetown Lions made about $1200 profit from the event, which will go to their national Sight First 2 project. |
