Promotion could see local shopper walk away with one million dollars

One lucky Te Awamutu shopper could collect a million dollars this Christmas.

Carpet Court owner Brett Watson was inspired to run the ‘Te Awamutu Million Dollar’ promotion by the success of the recent ‘Win $100,000’ promotion run by Curtain, Tile and Carpet Court and Furniture Court. Like that promotion, the new one offers a shopper who has their name drawn at the promotion climax one chance in 100 of drawing the major prize - in this case one million dollars cash.

Mr Watson convinced 24 other retailers to join him in funding the promotion, which runs from October 1 through to December 17.

When shoppers buy products at those stores, for each $100 they spend they will be entitled to fill in one entry to the draw. The $100 can be made up of purchases at separate times (of $20 plus) and from separate participating retailers, as long as the voucher is stamped each time.

"I would have liked to include all the retailers in town, but that just was not possible,” Mr Watson says. “What I really hope is that this promotion leads to a lot more people shopping in Te Awamutu, rather than other centres like Hamilton, right through to Christmas and if this happens there’s a spinoff for everyone.”

The promotion will climax with a giant draw day at Albert Park on Sunday, December 17.

“We had around a thousand people attend the draw for the $100,000 promotion, so we are anticipating thousands of people at Albert Park for the million dollar draw,” Mr Watson says.

There will be 25 draws on the day leading up to the big prize draw. Participating retailers have contributed prizes including such items as a motorbike, heat pump, home theatre system, digital camera, trampoline and log fire.

The shopper drawn to take their chance in the main draw, if not successful in drawing the million dollars, will still take away a $6000 package, comprising a high definition ‘42 inch’ Plasma TV and home theatre system.

“I really do hope some lucky shopper wins the million dollars - and spends some of it in Te Awamutu,” Mr Watson says.
