Organisers of the first Waipa Arts Trail have endeavoured to present an interesting and varied line-up of artists.

The Arts Trail, which takes place on Sunday, April 2, features the work of 11 local artists and is presented in conjunction with Waipa Community Arts Council.

“In putting together this first Arts Trail we have attempted to present a collection of artists whose work is representative of the type of art being produced in the area,” says one of the organisers, Lynne Stone. “There is a wide variety of applied arts as well as fine arts.”

Mrs Stone says they are hoping people decide, because of the power cut that day (due to scheduled work on Transpower’s main supply line), to get themselves organised with a thermos and lunch and spend the day taking in the Arts Trail.

Mrs Stone, an abstractionist painter, is one of the artists opening their properties to the public - free of charge. Other painters participating in the trail are Margaret Dixon (Te Awamutu), Jane Finch (Paterangi) and Heather Eyre (Pirongia).

Potter Fiona McLeod will provide demonstrations of her wheel work between 10am-2pm.

Photographer Trish Macky has some eye-catching photography on show.

Waipa Embroiderers Guild will display textile art at the Rosebank Gallery and Arts Centre in Gorst Avenue. Toni Cavey is a self taught mosaic artist living on the slopes of Mt Pirongia. Pirongia’s Chris Gisler and Nynke Piebenga present a wide variety of wonderful weaving.

Brendan O’Brien of Kihikihi creates papier-mâchè and ceramic sculptures.

The Arts Trail takes place between 10am and 5pm. Fliers detailing the venues and notes bout the art on display are available at Te Awamutu Museum and Te Awamutu Information Centre.
