Community safety to fore

Te Awamutu’s Community Safety Day on Saturday attracted about 200 people.

It was organised by the Te Awamutu Volunteer Fire Brigade’s Fire Safety and Promotions Team.

Spokesperson Karl Tutty says the day is designed to give all emergency services and related groups the opportunity to present key safety messages, and to give the public the chance to see the services in a non-emergency situation.

“Certainly as far as the fire service goes considerable resources are going into fire safety education and prevention as well
as the actual attending of emergencies,” he says. “Many children will get the ‘Firewise’ programme through school, but it’s good to reinforce that to both the children and their parents.

“The demonstrations are also a chance for newer members of the services to gain experience in terms of working with other
emergency organisations and become more familiar with their equipment and procedures.”

The event was supported by Police, Fire Service, Ambulance, Waipa DC Civil Defence/Rural Fire, Select Security, SPCA and Westpac Rescue. The Brigade is grateful to those businesses which also assisted with the day.
