Walter Scott Reserve
Walter Scott Reserve is an area of native bush near Mt. Pirongia (29km / 25minutes drive from Te Awamutu). It includes two easy/moderate walks - one is about 30 minutes and the other is about 2 hours. The walks are suitable for most age groups, with slightly hilly terrain.
Directions:
- From Te Awamutu Post Office, head along Alexandra Street to Pirongia (11km).
- Turn left at Pirongia Service Station and head along SH39 (toward Otorohanga) for approx 10km. Turn right into Ngutunui Road.
- After 3.8km (just before the school) turn right into Pekanui Road.
- After 2.7km turn left into Scott Road and drive another 800m to the end of the road, where you'll find a grass carpark. The entrance to the bushwalk is just to the left of the carpark.
Points of Interest:
- On a clear day you can see Mt Ruapehu and Mt Ngauruhoe from the Southern boundary.
- Look out for the "Big Tree" (a huge Kahikatea) and the "Rimu Grove". These are both signposted from the main track.
Comfort & Safety:
- Sneakers are adequate footwear.
- Take your own water.
- Most of the walk is under bush canopy cover, i.e. not exposed to the sun.
- Some cellphones will not work on this walk.
- For the most part the track is reasonably well marked, but be warned that some of the signs and directions are not particularly clear.
Remember: Follow the white markers, not the pink ones (they indicate poison bait traps).
