Go
to Lake Ngaroto to fish for carp
with flour and water paste. Cook a barbecue. Break an egg
into a hole made in a slice of
bread and it’s easier for kids to
cook and eat. The BBQ is free to use but you should take a bucket of cleaning gear and a rubbish bag.
Take a day trip to Kawhia (check
tides). You can take the
Sand Rover out to Ocean Beach
and dig your own hot pool. Nearer town the beach is interesting with
lots of stones to turn
over and see the blue crabs
scuttling away. Have fish and
chips in the open air.
Raglan Backpackers will let
you hire canoes and life jackets
to paddle out on the incoming
tide.
Pirongia has a horse riding
establishment as does
Tuapiki’s farm/sea treks at
Aotea.
Drive up Maungakawa (Sanatorium Hill)
near Cambridge when the
spring flowers and birds are
there and admire the view. Picnic tables and
toilets provided.
A day trip to Waitomo for some fun walks. Take a picnic and stay till dark to see some glow worms too.
During the Summer go berry picking. Most of the local berry farms provide the opportunity to pick your own berries and eat some too! Keep an eye on the Courier for specific details.
